The Bupa London 10,000
The Men's Running boys take on the Bupa London 10,000
The sun shone briefly on the Bupa 10,000 on bank holiday Monday in London. Sadly, for the runners taking part, that brief if baking interlude was when the majority of the field, and all of the participants from Women’s and Men’s Running, were hitting the crucial 7K mark.
MR sub and columnist Philip Wilding and Art Editor Pio Blanco sinking a few well-deserved pints post raceWhich was our problem, not the organisers. For their part, the event was flawless, the mood upbeat, even if we did see two grown men squabbling and pushing each other like schoolchildren as they crossed the line (for shame, you morons). At the end of the day, the only people we could blame were ourselves. Our Art Editor Pio had partied all weekend and still came in with the best time, but then he is ten feet tall. While our photographer Eddie Macdonald ate the wrong pre-race meal and burped his way around the course, he ran alone for a lot of it, but still only lost to Pio by a minute, coming in at a windy 52mins. Sub and columnist Philip Wilding managed a respectable 55mins and then drank the afternoon away like a tramp chugging cider in the park. He woke up the next day still wearing his medal.
MR photographer Eddie Macdonald and his running buddy Eric YeungWhen the sweat wasn’t running into their eyes, they enjoyed some of London’s best landmarks, how often do you get to go past Big Ben and the London Eye without treading on a tourist? While the final straight down the Mall – which Mo Farah had shot down what seemed like hours before – was a lesson in living history even if it did feel like our hearts were going to beat out of our chests and disappear somewhere over Embankment. A thrilling race, but we’re not sure Paula Radcliffe would say the same.
